Netscreen claims that if you forget/lose the root password, you must send the unit back to have the password reset. This makes me unhappy on general principles -- I *like* being able to reset a password at 2am. When this happened to us, I personally drove the unit down to their office (I'm only about an hour away). A Tech Support person met me, took the unit, and returned it in about 10 minutes. It was the same unit, with configuration -- other than the password -- intact. This suggests to me that it's not a situation where you actually have to, say, replace EEPROM, but rather an actual procedure, involving either changing jumpers or work within the diag mode of the box.
