There are (were) 4 main spam blocking list, the first 3 of which are run though
mail-abuse.org
RBL - the granddaddy is a list of known email servers that initiate
unsolicited email. Entry is decided by a team headed by Paul Vixie. It tends to be
block only a small amount of spam and often has had mailing list servers for badly
managed mailing lists.
DUL - Dial Up List - tries to maintain a list of IP's belong to dial up
lines such as ISP modem pools etc.
This is useful to catch the not to bright chain letter enthusiast but
has less value now more professional spammers user cable/ADSL
RSS - Relay Spam Stopper -Maintains a list of mail server IP's that
have been used to relay spam. IP's are submitted by sending the spam with a keyword
list at head. RSS tests for open relay and adds them. Spam relays get on fast but they
are removed as soon as they show they are not open to relay. I find this is most
effective spam stopping list since most spam uses third party relays.
ORBS - Open Relay Behaviour Modification System - Similar to RSS but
more aggressive in adding IP's. The spam is not necessary just a request for relay
testing. The ORBS people and the mail-abuse.org people have had a long feud
unfortunately. It seems to have been forced out of business, even though it was most
effective at spam blocking (but also had most false positives).
See http://www.rahul.net/dhesi/orbs.faq.txt for some more information about ORBS
See http://www.idg.net.nz/webhome.nsf/UNID/6F7D8126804AC0B5CC256A5E00127D77!open for
some information about why it is shut down.

Obsolete - try mail-abuse.org instead. And ORBS is down. Permanently.
