Kernel Series 2.4.x uses a system called IP Tables, unless you compile it
with backward compatibility for ipchains then it will not support the use of
ipchains.
check your kernel configuration options.

Subject: Question About IPchains
I had updated my Red Hat linux kernel from 2.2.14 to 2.4.4. When the
update was finished, I found the linux firewall did not work right. After I
changed directory of "/etc/rc.d/init.d/" and typed "./ipchains status" , the
system told
me "incompatible kernel version". What can I do to solve the problem?
Thanks for your help.
