No Worries, Steve. Yeah I have smoothwall running right now. The installation was amazingly easy. The only thing I had to do was manually set the media type on my 3com combo cards. After that you access the firewall from another machine via a SSL connection configure dial up settings load ADSL firmware which I obtained from acatel, configured dhcp and enabled squid and snort. Very very easy all via point an click. It took all of about 15min from the beginning of install to an operating gateway. I was quite impressed to see that it had snort built in as I've been wanting to play with that for a while now.
I am yet to configure the VPN side. but a friend of mine is running smoothwall over his cable connection and we are going to do the same as you. An interesting aspect is that it ties in with some dynamic DNS providers. I am speculating now, but this may help sort out the problems I've had trying to configure semi permanent VPN's via a Dynamic interface using other software.
