Well. The theory is that Microsoft's products are vectors for infection via worms. This is true; but blocking based on mail client is a superficial solution compared with the much better ones already available. Once you are parsing the headers and taking action based upon those, why not use the Content-Type header instead. Same number of processor cycles to do the parsing and pattern matching, plus you are not cutting off communications.
I know of almost no corporation where blocking all outlook-generated email would be an acceptable solution*; quite frankly, anyone who "applauds" this decision as a "solution" to the risks associated with Outlook is remiss. We don't allow any email client to send a .scr file to our domain; neither should anyone. Thanks, Henry * If you offer any services, at all to the general public, you will want to be able to get feedback or develop relationships. Forcing them to use an "approved" mail client to do that (if there are other methods to solve the problem) is, imho, as contrary to the spirit of the internet as anything Microsoft has ever done. -----Original Message----- From: John Braden [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 12:13 PM Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Filtering e-mail from outlook users Well, I for one do not know why they would want to do that so please tell me. Seems to me that they would cut off a good portion of communication to a wide audience, but maybe they are unique and control their communications partners. We don't, so explain, please. The key word here is "best" way. These people want ALL e-mail sent by anyone running an outlook client wacked and they also want a message sent back to the user explaining the reason for the bounced mail. Quite frankly, I applaud their decision but let's not debate the "why do the want to do that" when we all know the answer to that question.
