PIX Firewall 5.1 and later installation

Please be sure to obtain and READ the release notes for
you new image before installing.

Installation
PIX Firewall systems with a floppy disk drive must use the
boot helper utility to upgrade to 5.1 or later software.
The follow instructions will create the boot helper disk.

1. Back up your existing PIX Firewall configuration to diskette
and write down your activation key.

2. Acquire the boot helper file from CCO. The file name
is bh512.bin. It is available in the same directory
as the Released PIX software code.

3. For UNIX systems, create the disk using the following command
        dd bs=18k <bh512.bin> /dev/rfd0

4. For PC systems, use the rawrite.exe utility included with
    the PC executable (eg: pix512.exe)

Step 1: Execute rawrite.exe from a DOS prompt
Step 2: Follow the instructions as prompted

Installing the PIX 5.1 or later software with boot helper

1. You must have the PIX software image on an accessible
TFTP server. From the PIX, make sure you can ping the
    TFTP server before you start.

2. Insert the boot helper disk into the PIX floppy disk drive
    and reboot the system.

3. At the prompt, use the following commands:
        interface 1 <---this can be 0-5>
address 10.1.1.1 <---this is your pix interface
server 10.1.1.200 <---this is your tftp server
file /tftpboot/pix512.bin <---*this is the pix binary
        tftp <---this starts the download
*Some UNIX systems require the complete path.
Others require the path to be noted in the inetd.conf file.

4. The system will reboot automatically and the new image will be
    installed.

Installing to 5.1 or later software on a PIX-515 or PIX-506 system

1. Make sure you write down your activation key before you continue.
Use the "show version" command to view your key and serial number.
Make sure you save your configuration to the system as well as
to a tftp server if possible (review command reference guide for
     instructions)

2. Reboot your PIX-515 or PIX-506. You will see a message and
a 10 second count down. You must hit "escape" before the count
down reaches 0 at which time the system will boot the previous image.

3. At the monitor prompt, use the following commands to tftp the new
     image into your system:
        interface 1 <---this can be 0-5>
address 10.1.1.1 <---this is your pix interface
server 10.1.1.200 <---this is your tftp server
file /tftpboot/pix512.bin <---*this is the pix binary
        tftp <---this starts the download
*Some UNIX systems require the complete path.
Others require the path to be noted in the inetd.conf file.

4. Your system will boot up after this point.

Upgrading from 5.1.1 to a later version:
This again requires a tftp server to be accessible.

1. Make sure you write down your activation key before you continue.
Use the "show version" command to view your key and serial number.
Make sure you save your configuration to the system as well as
to a tftp server if possible (review command reference guide for
     instructions)

2. Enter the enable mode of you PIX and use the following command
        copy tftp flash

3. Enter the appropriate information for each question asked:
eg: Address or name of remote host [10.1.1.200]?
                Source file name [/tftpboot/pix512.bin]?
                [yes\no\again]? yes

4. Once the image is successfully installed, you must reboot the
PIX in order for the new image to run.
