RE: Firewall recommendations?Garland;
First a pre-qualifier; You will probably get many recommendations for
products that will be just the right fit for your clients needs from this
group of professionals... this response is not a negative slap on any
product that may or may not be mentioned in response to your question
here....... yes I work for a firewall company... but they will remain
nameless and blameless as my opinions are mine and mine alone.
It all depends on what you really intend to accomplish....
You can of course make a decision to buy the cheapest thing you can find
with no regard to security (but hey... it will probably be really really
fast and easy to install and manage!) that offers your client a warm fuzzy
feeling for at least a moment... till someone gets in to the network...
defaces the website... sets up a warez FTP server for his (her) friends,
launches attacks against other companies from your clients network, steals
the companies database or intellectual property..... or just grabs the
companies HR records so he (or she) can sell the data to someone else that
will establish credit card accounts in the names of the companies
employees........
Or you could try something that is surprisingly novel / innovative in
the industry today..... work with the client to establish / define a
security policy that mitigates the risks that the company is really exposed
to...... Then and only then; Purchase a firewall that meets the requirements
outlined and set forth by the security policy.
The only purpose of a firewall is to enforce a security policy... not to
become the security policy.
Sorry to all for the bit of sarcasm here but this to me is one of the
largest problems with network insecurity today.
Off the soap box and back to watching the super bowl.....

Subject: Firewall recommendations?
Importance: High
Hello Everyone,
As I am not very versed in all the different firewall solutions I thought I
might pose this question to the experts. What I am looking for is a firewall
solution for a small company that has one main office and 5 satellite
offices. The requirements would be a "cheap" solution with relative low
ownership costs. Any suggestions are very appreciated.
TIA
