I am at the beginning which network programming in C/C++. I also looked at socket programming and pcap. But you will get some probs with that because these sockets might you wnat to use building your firewall seem to operate "behind" the firewall. c/C++ is still a good choice but you have to go deep into the OS. For whcih OS do you want to write your personal firewall ? When you choose Linux for Exsample you have to program kernel modules - so C is a good choice. In Windows you might programm some System DLLs. C is also a good choice when programming DLLs. But I think you need some skills in Assembler and maybe Reverse Engeneering when building a personal firewall for Windows. Are there perhhaps GNU personal firewalls for giving an excample ?
