HSTEM is an interactive course that combines academic inquiry and community engagement to investigate the theme of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within STEM fields at Caltech and beyond. We will survey the interdisciplinary literature on the ways in which intersecting identities—e.g., gender, class, race, sexuality, disability—shape STEM persistence, success, and belonging. Course work includes daily readings, reflective writing, in-class discussion, and collaborative research, which students will present at the end of the course.
