Dear New EAS Graduate Students:

We are super excited to welcome you to our Division! We want your experience
in EAS to be a happy and productive one, in terms of both academics and social
interaction. We hope that you will make friends of classmates and lab mates
and build healthy professional and personal relationships during your time in
EAS and at Caltech.

To that end, a group of EAS grad students is putting on a small discussion
group activity this week for all of you called Respect is a Part of Research.

In this activity, these student facilitators will divide you into groups of 10
on Zoom and discuss for 35-40 minutes a few fictitious (but realistic/inspired
by true stories) and challenging scenarios involving issues of equitable
treatment of others. In discussing these scenarios in small groups, you can
get to know your facilitators as a resource, connect with fellow G1s, and learn
to navigate successfully issues that can arise in your work and social spaces
at Caltech.

The activity will take place Thursday, October 7, 3:00-4:00pm.

Division Chair Harry Atwater, as well as Professors Beverley McKeon and Melany
Hunt are excited about this event and strongly encourage your participation.

We know starting the new academic year and your graduate school careers has
been very busy, but this is a chance just to relax and discuss some interesting
issues with your fellow graduate students. We look forward to seeing you!

On behalf of Billie Dawn Greenblatt (host) and Teresa Mejia (co-host),

Sincerely,
Tanya
