I had not considered that possibility, but yes. Since I've been worked with
openldap config directory and python paster's templates, both with files with
symbols in its name, I associate the behaviour  with the filename.

Thanks a lot. I tried it, but get the same result. One strange thing: after
killing mimedb once, it starts to autocomplete without problem.

P.S: I needed to apply the fish-1.23.0-ARG_MAX.patch to compile.
