So besides interleaving my cron jobs so that they do not overlap in time so
closely, there is probably not much I can do about this right now. Does that
sound right?

That being the apparent case, are there any real negative consequences or
side effects to this? It seems as though the shell commands are still being
executed, only without access to any universal variables (which is perfectly
OK in my case).
