Have you tried setting TMPDIR environment variable to somewhere within $HOME?  
In theory all programs that use /tmp should use TMPDIR instead when it's 
set... and it seems treacherous to me to use, for almost any purpose, a /tmp 
in which all files disappear hourly... files could disappear one second after 
they're created?
