By pressing Alt-up and Alt-down, each commandline is **tokenized
into separate
elements** just like it would be before execution, and each such token is
**matched against the token under the cursor** when the search began.
(Note this is different with readline's `C-r`.)
Maybe you happened to encounter a token with only one match?
