vim has a large number of features which expect a POSIX-compliant shell.
fish is not such a shell.  You should probably set shell=bash (or
your POSIX-compliant shell of choice) in your .vimrc.

Also, it doesn't hurt to search the mailing list archives when you have
a problem.  This same issue came up just last week ;)
