You have to configure your terminal app to make your alt key work.

In Terminal.app go to Terminal => Preferences => Profiles => <Select
a profile> => Keyboard => Use Option as Meta key

In iTerm2 go to iTerm2 => Preferences => Profiles => <Select a profile>
=> Keys => Keyboard behaviour
