I am reluctant to give advice to you about this, since it is a personal choice
and a trade-off. I use Debian Stable myself (still version 9, I haven't
upgraded to 10 yet), and I was definitely not happy with the 2.4 version and
have been using the latest (currently 3.0.2) and I have been happy with it.
One piece of advice that I can give is that you should always report your
version when reporting a problem or asking for help. And if you report version
2.4, there will probably be people who will tell you that the first thing you
should do is upgrade fish. In other words, it's easier to get support for the
latest version.

Thanks for the quick reply. MX Linux is based on Debian stretch, but
they have installed lots of extras. When I checked their package
installer I found an upgrade for fish to version 3.0.2, so I ran it and
I am now on that version. Since it was an upgrade and not a fresh
install it all seems to work just fine.
Now to look for the changes!!
Thanks for all the help, I will remember in future to always report the
version when I report any problem.
Gratefully,
Neil
