Hi Greg,
I was guessing that this was a thing that some people would never bump
into at all. I had seen the examples in the documentation and it was my
own editing blinkers that kept over looking the fact that the examples
did not have parentheses.
I've followed your suggestion regarding the file extension. I was
modifying an existing script that had been written for bash originally,
but it's now a fish script.
