They chatted
about the good
TV shows;
new information
about half decent
film directors.
I smiled often
and laughed
at their jokes
which was only easy
because I laughed
when everyone else
laughed.

No one caught me
looking for cues-
I'm grateful.

If they had, they'd ask;
I would have to explain
that I never watched
those television shows.

"What do you do, then?"
they will ask, because
if you don't watch TV
you become interesting.

I always want to say,
"I write," but then:
"What do you write about?"
and I'd have to lie
or tell them
I write about
how much time I am wasting
by talking to them
and being at this party
instead of writing.

These thoughts make my smile
start to ache, and I excuse myself
amidst accusations
of deliberate and dramatic
exits.

I hurry home very early
to watch TV
and fall back
to sleep.
