Statistically, Nearly Being Struck By Lightening
is as Rare as Actual Contact.
================================

1.
There was a burst of light,
a crash of something
like a falling sky.

Black soot
at the foot of my shoes:
The lightening had struck,
and then it had gone.

I made no claim to special powers.
Well, okay. I could exaggerate
leaps into a bound, turn myself
from mere 10 year old boy
to precocious monk and child prodigy.

And I could see through adults.
But that is hardly a superpower.

Instead:

I gained the ability
to withstand the extraordinary
without taking part in it.

So, hand me a cape.

2.
Memory of the light grew dim.

But I hold out hope
in darkest nights
that I will die
of some overlooked
internal burn.
How nice to think
I could be touched so deeply
by any other light
but yours.
