On a highway on-ramp
every night at two a.m
there is a beggar
of some sort; waiting
for traffic [at 2AM!]
to stop at the light
so he can approach them
with an empty cup.

It seems to me
that _any_ job
would be better
than that one.

But interestingly,
it's a franchise.
I see different beggars
every night. Sometimes
there is the man who sells
roses- he makes money,
people roll down windows.
There is another man
with the mcdonalds cup,
a crate full of bottled water
which he keeps for himself.
Third, a bald guy, looks strung out,
knocks on your windshield,
kind of scary really. No one
gives him money, but
he shakes his head
if you try to ignore him,
shrugs his shoulders.
It's like they really expect it.

And it's good, sometimes.
If I had a buck, I'd donate it
to the 2AM brigade
of futile, ridiculous hope.
