The first sign was a blue
sky in February and that kind
of air that crawls your skin
into manic, swooping delight.
I walked down the street
like I had new sneakers from the moon,
and above me in this endless planet
arium of glowing the color of
MY eyes, there were these
creatures unrecordable
that cut into the nitrogen,
melted it and twisted
their little bodies like
flaming cotton taffy.

My eyes are not fast cameras,
recording days of Arizona sky in
seconds, all smears of purplegolds, but
listen! These creatures swept across
the sky like children's hands on soft marble,
and most were dragons!
The serpents somersaulted,
and codified their synchronized swimming,
they tumbled together down into
the snowdrops and into the rumbling iron
and back-rippled brick of Cambridge,
and, my god, I've never seen such gaping,
sun bleached Bostonians, their
shadows burned into the already burning ground
even blacker than theif briefcases. The clouds
were so white they nearly turned the nitrous
sky violet deep, but not quite because
light can not conquer itself.

Today, my friend, there was
a sky filled with gleaming mythos. It turned
my grey city pink, at noon, at noon!
Even secretaries smiled.

-Tay Arrow Sherman.
