when yahya griffin was seven
his mother took him to the zoo
yahya had never been to the zoo before
in fact, the only animals he had ever
seen
were the birds and stray cats
he often spied through his bedroom
window
way up high on the seventh floor
an ear to ear grin slashed his small
face
as he bounced on the seat of the bus
that was taking him and mother to the
zoo
when they arrived
his mother paid the admission,
walked with the little boy through the
gate
and asked,
"what would you like to see first
yahya?"
yahya had always wanted to see a bear
and he said so
down the path they walked together
and together now, they stood
in front of a habitat with four black bears in
it
four!
little yahya had not even seen one
before
he was overwhelmed and stared in
amazement
"i'll be right back yahya, do not go
anywhere,"
said his mother walking away
he giggled and waved without looking
he didn't see the tears in her eyes
as she backed slowly away from him
didn't see her linger for just a
moment
before finally turning away
and never turning back
he didn't see his mother
he didn't see her again
little yahya laughed at the bears
