What is it we try to communicate to each other

Someday I will tell a stranger, point blank:
"And if I could convince you that everything is
always beautiful, could you fall in love with me?"
Maybe this is all I am saying to everyone, anyway:
even in my small jokes to riders on the subway
or small acknowledgments to the waitress
that the service has been extraordinary.
Once, I piled up the unused butter packs
and signed the check: "I have built you a tower
of butter."

What else could I yell out of car windows
to change peoples lives? Is it enough to drink
Vanilla Coke, the windows down, speeding
and staring at the moon? How do I touch you?

this buzz, this slow hum.
this slowly undulating element.
i would have told you, if you'd have asked,
without words, without aproximation,
what it is we're trying to communicate.

communicate this:
a perfect circle around the moon,
and a handful of gummi worms
sprayed neatly on the carpet.
there is no way other than
a straight, vibrant line
from my being to yours.
