Ever since the problems with electricity I have not been thinking about us, though I turn the faucet off while brushing my teeth, in memory of beautiful conservationist you.

There's something of me inside
the top floor of the Eiffel Tower
striking charcoal lines on a sky
construction paper blue, folding
to touch the ends of the Earth
bringing fire to the back room
while I was on my way to work
and the car stopped working
as I was leaving, and you and me
we never called, and the dog
knew it had to strike me down.

I'm alone today. The sky is red
with the fireball descending
and New York City is black bars
rising to meet the fire pricked moon.
Toronto, Cleveland, Connecticut
cities connected by nothing else
but power lines, highways,
satellites, and news reports:
The people are in the city
and the atmosphere is similar
to a carnival; and there is a girl
handing out water to all the people
as they walk home on sidewalks
talking to each other, like people
never seem to do.

You and me were safe in Boston.
If one of us left, the whole country
might fall apart. It might, regardless:
These days I have left the water
running, because running
is all I know how to do.

-e.
