Ryan sits under the slide
-- The other boys won't help me
search for buried treasure--
Grubby little paws, digging
in the sandy woodchips.

The other boys, run
scream yell fight
Too big, at eight or nine
to join in his imaginary world.

He works, so diligently
loosening the soil, and then
scooping it up out of the hole.
His face, so serious, as he concentrates.

-- Why haven't I found it yet?--
Eyes wide with disbelief.
I drop some coins when he isn't looking.
"keep digging... look I see something!"

He shuffles through the sand
and passes over the silver.
"Look, there... you found money!!"
-- but money's not treasure...-- he sighs.

Try telling that to the landlord,
or better yet, to those who search
in diamond eyes for hidden secrets.
That treasure may be found,
but it's just so hard to keep.

"well keep digging then"
He must know something I've forgotten.
He kneels back down,
and continues searching.
