I make a living treading water,
holding a television
on my head.
Sometimes some poor bastard
comes in to tell his story.
One was an empowerment guru.
He coaches people on achieving
personal success and fulifillment
spent an hour looking
at two identical
television sets.
At the end, he shakes hands
and asks me:
"You're a pretty good salesman,
Eryk. But do you know who is
the greatest salesman of all time?"
"No," I say. But I know.
"It's Jesus Christ. Because,
if you buy what he's selling,
it changes the entire universe
once it is inside of your heart."
I don't know what to say
to these guys. We got one in
who hated Disney Movies
for teaching children that
animals had souls.
I wonder, after, if he does that
to everyone: are there joke books
for Christian Missionaries?

It's Jesus. Because only he
puts out the fire of sin.
You're a very good airline pilot,
but do you know who is
the greatest airline pilot?
It's Jesus. Because he could fly
men's souls to heaven.
Me, I am just here trying
to earn enough to pay down
the too much debt I've earned,
and so people assume
I am a ripe fruit for evangelism.
I want to tell them,
my Grandmother is dead,
and her inheritance has gone
to my bill collectors.
I want to say
there is a reason,
but they want reasons.
They love reasons-
every personal tragedy
is a recruitment bonus,
every blow to dignity
is proof that we
will
soon have provided
what it is we need.
I am not at all enraged
against God, and it is not
a bitter sense that God
cannot exist in a world with
all its vast injustices, oh!
No, they have answers
for that.
What if I told them the truth?
Before he even got to ask me,
what if I turned to him
while he was deciding between
the two identical televisions,
"Mr Empowerment, sir, please,
do you know who is the greatest
God of all
time?"
I am. Because I sell myself
with every footstep, one step
closer to nothing, and when my body
dissolves it is no real loss-
I will go nowhere, and I am here now.
