I went down to the beach today. For miles up and down the coastline, there was no one, and a grey sky was the only witness I was there. The winds were calm and the sea was silent, as I walked along the shore. Drawn in by distance, I stopped in the still cold, and stared out over blue shadows, softly touching and then, softly pulling away. Picking up a stick, I wrote your name in the wet sand The long years seemed swallowed by a momentary daring. Seeing your name exposed to that autumn sky, I felt my heart beat strong and somehow, smile.
