"Working nicely" probably means that your FIX engine did not complain. It does 
not mean that it is a good idea to use FIX 4.2 fields (from the data 
dictionary) in FIX 4.4 messages as they could have been deprecated or replaced 
by something else (e.g. tag 76 ExecBroker).

The relationship between FIX version and data dictionary is that you cannot 
separate one from the other. Every FIX version has its data dictionary and 
using FIX x.y implies that you are using the associated data dictionary.

Which part of the FIX documentation made you believe otherwise? Maybe there is 
room for improvement to make things clearer for novices such as yourself.
