In addition to FIX-specific literature and specifications, you may also want to read a book titled "Securities Operations" by Michael Simmons - this is a great introduction to electronic trading operations in general and can be very helpful in understand the context in which people are using FIX-enabled applications. I would highly recommend you read that book at the same time that you are learning the technical specifics of the FIX protocol.
