I can think of a few ways to contribute :-

1. Participate in open source project(s), QuickFIX/J comes to mind first. There
may be others, try Googling.

2. Participate in working groups @ FIXProtocol

http://fixprotocol.org/working_groups/

Note that some working groups are restricted.

3. Give feedback on the FIXProtocol specifications / documents, as a newbie you
would be able to take a fresh look at them and think about FIX in ways I don't
/ can't.

4. Give feedback / suggestions about this website, forum is

K. Mahesh
