Sean, the weird preamble indicates that you are looking at a pcap formatted 
file (possibly produced by tcpdump -s0 -o ...)

If this is indeed the case, then you have ETH, IP and UDP headers in front of 
the payload.

I'll try and download one of the files and have a closer look.
