The discussion on stallion lines piques my interest because four of them mentioned have been fascinated me And two of them I decided to put into my breeding program. Not to say that some of the dynamite new imports will not do the same things, but when you look at performance in "ordinary hands" these consistantly have offspring that stand out. I am not a good enough judge of "pretty" yet, but I am absolutely interested in ability, versatility and attitude. I just had to add that I feel fortunate to have two MVFErlend daughters in my breeding program. One a grey, full sister to Gandolf,( I think he is still a stallion) the other a brown dun filly born last year. The brown dun combines both the Gjest and Erlend line, since the mom is out of BDF Malcolm Locke. I think Erlend's conformation and size of his offspring will complement the Gjest line. Both lines are known for disposition and ethic. I do not know if Erland sperm will be available by AI any more since he has been sold but at this point I would repeat the cross. The filly is large, well balanced and incredibly tractable and friendly( but not for sale). I am very pleased with her so far. The grey Erlend daughter prances, is a sweetheart in terms of disposition, but not the same grey color as her dad. Hostar was also a choice for the Malcolm Locke mare but when the time came he was between owners. I am selfishly pleased that he will be coming to Idaho, as I would like to see him crossed on that mare. By next year I will have offsrping in both directions with the MVFErlend, and Gjest lines.
The stallion I chose, however for my long term program is a direct Gjest son, Titian, not out of the legendary Stine but Maryke ( Haeger-Knecht(sp)) . If you look at the offspring of this cross, ( 8) I believe there are proprotionally more than the expected number of outstanding horses - Part of it of course is the homes they go to-people who will promote them, but partly because of the potential of the horses. I am anxious to see Titian's cross with the grey erland daughter. We are expecting good things, too, with his cross on two Orcas mares. If all works out I will bring him and an offspring to the October 25th anniversary show. kathy in Southern Idaho We too have had a relative warm, but wonderfully wet winter. ( our average rainfall is 11 inces and we are coming out of an eight year drought- hopefully)
