This message is from: "Karen McCarthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Now, being a blonde from california, I am reluctant to reveal the 'valley girl' in me, but isn't it just too cool, the varied menu of information & level of sharing that occurs on this list? I mean c,mon, Janne throws her hands up in culinary defeat at cooking lamb, and Linda from Scotland bails her out. How cool is that??! ...got a saddle that won't fit your "plush" pony? Are your mares udders resembling the La Brea tar pits?? Don't despair, ask the list...Okay, I'll stop gushing, but in all seriousness, yes we need an outlet for the NFHR membership to freely exchange ideas, queries, etc w/ the NFHR; this is not the place, but due to the amount of well meaning posts re. the NFHR + it's policies, it cries out the need for a such a place.
Seeing Gail's post, I Think I will make a big effort to get out to Denver to see Beth and Co. turn it on! So, Gail, you and Jim will have company. I am going to twist my best fjord buddy Jacquelyn's arm and she'll come as well - heck we were almost going to Houston earlier this month to see the Lippizaners, but our free tickets vaporized...But how can we deny seeing dancing fjordies? Especially when we will be in awesomely fun company. I have been pretty busy of late, getting a big move completed at my work, working from home in the interim, and preparing for a long journey eastward this weekend no less! We leave Christmas eve day. I sold my nice 3 year old gelding Januar to Anne Crandall, in Michigan. (You have to realise that I had literally been hoarding Jan, as he is just a super gelding, every time working with him is a treat. I made a video to send to Anne + watched it once w/ my friend Kaley who helped shoot it, and told Kaley: If this horse doesn't sell I'll be a..._______. ) So, Anne, who very sadly lost her award winning gelding Yorick*, (on my birthday!) this past October, will have a new boy to work with. She had been looking for similar bloodlines, and boy, did she get them! Januar is by Sven, and Sven is a full brother to Anne and her mother Bernie's stallion, Ivan. Sven was bred in Michigan, and sold to Gene Bauer; now his son is literally going home to the 'fatherland'. I told Anne that if I sold jan,I was only going to sell him to a home where he could be USED and SHOWN, and I couldn't of asked for a better home and owner. So, you gals in the midwest, keep an eye out for Anne + Jan... I called ahead this week and made overnite boarding arrangements with some wonderful folks...there is a very good website called Horsemotels.com. Second time I have used it, and so far everything has been great! Where there wasn't a referral from the website, I did a google search of large animal vets in the immediate area near our route, and they either had a place onsite, or referred me to a local person who overnites horses. I am so excited to be a) going on a road trip, even in Dec. and b) I have never been past Colorado! I looked up Marshall in the google-images, and it really looks beautiful w/ lots of trees + historic buildings (wow, like can you tell now I really AM from Nevada?!) Here's our agenda: We leave Carson City early sat. am, and via I-80 plan to overnite in Park City, Utah. (589 mi.) Then on to Big Springs, Ne. (544 mi.) Sun. nite; Baxter, Ia. (514 mi.) Mon. nite, and on to Anne's in Marshall, Mi. (476 mi.) by Tues. evening. We'll be driving Dave's '92 Dodge Ram w/ our Lance camper, and towing a 3 horse slant load set up w/ one big stall in the back that i usually haul my pair in (behind the carriage in the front). It has high sides on it, so I am debating whether to seal them. Jan has always been out 24/7 w/ just trees and a fenceline for shelter; my vet thinks he'll be fine. I checked the forecast and it looks fairly decent, w/ just a threat of snow for Mon/Tues. I have made about 5 nites of meals in advance (sorry, mutton is NOT on the menu!) and we'll bring the dogs, lots of CD's,etc. Jan will be getting a speacial travel 'soup' once or twice a day. I make it when I haul long distance: a slurry of bran, a teeny bit of grain, chopped carrots, probiotic and powdered electrolytes. I have made it a couple of times for Jan this week to get him used to it (yeah right, a fjord who won't eat?!) and get the probiotics in his system. Water will be the hardest thing to deal with: we can't carry freshwater in the camper tank, so we've figured we'll carry 2 jerry cans full inside the camper - that way it won't be so cold for Jan. So, List, have a very merry, Joyous Christmas with all of your family + friends which of course includes all of our sweet, generous fjords. You know where I'll be! Its really good and a must have in any Shetland home at New Year! It is usually eaten as "tattie soup" with "Bannocks" cut in half with butter and the meat inside. The mutton is usually cured over a peat fire, but this is not so common nowadays. It will keep for ages once its dried. http://www.shetland-heritage.co.uk/brochures/themed_brochures/food_&_drink/local_recipes.htm Linda Scotland
