We usually give our horses free choice all year and they spend very little time indoors unless there is food or if the flies are bad. Occassionally in the winter, we will lock them in the barn for safety - we get really bad freezes and we've had a couple horses go down and be unable to get back up on the ice. It is amazing to watch them stand outside in a snowstorm when they could be warm and dry indoors. I've never seen the Fjords shiver, but the poor old Arab has a bad time of the winter.
