Maybe our experience can be of some help in your decision process.
While some horses do quite well kept "whole" for several months/years,
some do not. We have had both kinds. Our first colt was sold at 9
months old as a stallion. He was beautiful, threw lovely babies, etc.
But he never adjusted to his hormones and remained extremely
energetic, hard to keep weight on, etc. He was gelded at the age of
five and is now nine years old. He has made a wonderful gelding and
is the perfect gentleman. Another young (14 months) horse came to us
recently gelded (three weeks before we got him). He remained "studdy"
the entire time we had him, although he had never been used for
breeding. We sold him to a farm where he is the only horse and he
does quite well. While we had him he went through the fence twice to
get to our mares. My current gelding was "cut" at seven months. He
is a pretty little fellow and a perfect gentleman. I had him gelded
because I wanted to keep him as my riding horse, no other reason.
Maybe he would have grown to be an acceptable stallion, but he was to
be my horse and I do not like to handle stallions. Sometimes you have
to decide whether or not to geld a horse based on what his intended
use is.
Hope this helps.
