Cindy, you probably have a calcium deficiency for one thing.  Bran and
barley have little calcium, as does local grass and timothy has less than
alfalfa. Also dry ground requires greasing of hooves.  How is the selenium
there? We have had a dry and beautiful winter here and I am struggling with
a crack in a very healthy otherwise hoof that keeps splitting.  Every other
day I put oil on it and it seems to be working.  Maybe Steve will suggest
something.  Genetics are possible but the unrelated horse having it also
implies a systemic problem I should think.  Jean
