Gail,
From a non-violent human perspective, giving a horse a belly-kick seems
pretty outrageous. However, when the situation warrants it, and we are "talking horse", i.e. herd dominance dynamics, a belly-kick is sometimes the perfect antidote to an out of line beastie. I would almost rather use something other than my hand, and sometimes my hands are too occupied, say holding a saddle; as perfect timing is of the essence, a well placed swift kick is just perfect, (IMO) Just got in from a great day of riding, despite the blustery cold weather. 2 weekends in a row of not working the ponies was just too much for me - I just put on 7 layers of clothes and said to hell with the weather, lets ride! All 3 horses did great & we survived the weather too.
nite,
Karen
