We, too have had problems with the vaccines. A few years ago, my son's wife
and I, took two 7 week old Tonkinese kittens to the vet for their distemper
related vaccines.
Within 3 days one kit was staggering and had lost control of its bowels.
The other kit took the same thing within a week. We spent in the vicinity
of $1500.00 in vet bills over the next few months and even took the kitten
to P.E.I. to the Maritime Vet training hospital. I struggled to keep "Kane"
alive for 8 months. He would stagger for 2 months, and overnight would clear
up and act almost normal for a time. Sometimes he would seem to be better
after taking the drug Antirobe. The kittens immune systems seemed to be
destroyed. Mine died at the age of 8 months with phemonia. His brother died
last spring at the age of 4 years. My son could simply not cope anymore with
the intermitant bowel problem since their baby was starting to walk. ( Other
symptoms were lower than normal body temperature, enlarged heart and
anemia.) Kane was tested for Felv. and fip., as well as toxoplasmosis. The
disease was not contagious and resembled Malaria in humans in its seemingly
erratic cycles. Any comments Steve? No vet we know has any idea what could
have caused this ailment...but I blame the modified live distemper vaccine!
The kittens were normal till they had their first needles.

Now back to vaccines in horses....we, too have a problem with horses going
off their feed after vaccinations. Right now we give only tetanus and
rabies.
Our Akita came down with mange this fall, and I have read that mange
sometimes occurs in dogs with comprimised immune systems. The only
distemper vaccine available around here is a modified live vaccine. We were
warned when we bought the Akita in Caribou, not to use regualar distemper
vaccines but to get killed ones. Since modified live was the only one
available that is what we got. Could this low immunity be caused, as I
suspect, from the modified live vaccines? Comments Steve?

Now Lou.... VBG....Tonkinese cats are a cross between Siamese and Burmese
cats. If you would like to see pics of mine go to this site....In Catladys
den (my album) you will see pics of my cats. I also have 4 other albums
there. I believe this site is being worked on for the next day or two...so
if it is unavailable keep trying. It will be up and running soon. Here is
the site....http://community.webshots.com/album/819194 There are also
pics of Storm in my horse album.

Mary....I, too have an old mare....a 32 year old POA. I now feed her a
pelleted extruded feed ..Blue Seal Vintage Senior. She still nibbles hay
but had lost 100 pounds on hay and sweet feed 3 years ago. With this feed,
she gained the 100 pounds back plus. She is fat and sassy. One can even
add water and make it into a mash if necessary. So even a horse with no
teeth can eat and gain. Thought this would be good for you to know in case
your mare gets unable to digest her hay properly.
Well gotta get to bed...Night everyone, Sue in N.B. (Desert Storm's mom)
