That's my preference also -- if a horse walks with his head near my hip,
it's easy, when he takes a step forward with the near foot, for his hoof
to scrape down the back of my ankle or hit my ankle bone. That HURTS!!! 

I also want to see more than the horse's head from the corner of my eye
-- when I can read more of the language of his whole body, I have more
time to react in case something happens.
