I have to agree here with the variety being good for the horse. Our
first horse got so hot in the hunter/jumper arena that our trainer
suggested trail riding for 'mental conditioning' on alternate training
days. It took a little while, as the horse saw trail riding as
equivalent to fox hunting and would get really hot at the start of a
ride, but it did worlds of good for his temperment and his ability to
concentrate in the ring. Likewise, when we did more trail riding than
ring work, he seemed to miss the ringwork that he had so come to detest.
Just my personal thoughts,

I think a really good trainer would never eliminate trail riding form the
training regumine of a performance horse. We don't. Conditioning is key, so
hill-climbing is really valuble. Happy horses are eager to please which leads
to progressive training, so trail riding is key since it makes them happy.
VARITY in training builds strong happy athletes!
