Sam.
I hope your filly if doing okay. My prayers are with you.
My colt coliced at 4 weeks and after not being able to resolve the colic we
took him to Rochester. The colic seemed to resolve itself but he still was
not well so they keep him and his mother for a week as they treat him for a
virus sending samples to Cornell for rotavirus, samonella virus and corona
virus. All came back negative, he seemed fine and came home. Two and a half
weeks later he coliced again, back to Rochester again this time for sugury,
a birth defect with a diverticulum (a three inch pocket) at the end of his
small intestine and a meso-diverticular band. Succesful surgery and all
should be fine. Ten days later colic again, not responding to drugs, back to
Rochester, this time fluid in the large intestine, wait and watch. I will
not do sugury again, and mentally pepare to put him down. He is fine in the
morning and comes home. Still on stall rest from sugury, Yesterday he
coliced again, will not go to Rochester again, though they have been
wonderful and I would highly reccomend them to anyone, the line has to be
drawn. The plan was to keep him comfortable until daylight then put him
down, The hole was dug. I spent the night with him checking him every 1/2
hour to see when I needed to give him more drugs to keep him comfortable. At
one check in the middle of the night he looks at me like what are you doing
here?
By morning he is bright and chipper and looks the picture of health.
He is only 12 weeks old. What do you do, wait for the next time?
Sorry this is such a long way around to tell you I feel for you,
understand what you are going through, and wish you the best with you
filly. If you need someone who has been there to talk to.Let me know.
Best of Luck, let me know how you make out.
Debbie
ps.note to all: Please ask you vetinarinans to check their gastro tubes. On
a routine tubing for a small colic to my daughters event horse, while at a
training barn, the tube broke off in the horse requiring stomach sugury to
remove 40 inches of broken tube.
