I visited our local library yesterday and came home with a wonderful video
in a series called 'The Visible Horse' by Susan Harris and Peggy Brown. Some
of you may recognise the name. Susan is the author of many books and
particularly the US Pony Club Manuals....she is a wonderful & knowledgeable
teacher.
I recommend this video to all of you but esp. to those who may just be
starting out in the riding and driving arena. It will surely help everyone
develop a far better understanding of the horse and how it moves. Also how
we can maintain healthier horses by choosing proper fitting equipment and
developing our own skills so as to avoid getting in the horses way when we
ride.
She uses a live horse(white) which is painted with a skeletal system on one
side and a muscular system on the other. She then systematically goes
through each system and applies it to how the horse moves and what affect
the rider has on the two systems....extremely interesting and not boring at
all.
It also contains valuable exercises for stretching specific muscle groups
and how we can help our horses feel better when they are working and
stressing their bodies for our benefit.
Brian and I watched it together last night and agreed (when does that
happen?) that if everyone had the opportunity to watch this tape, our horses
would surely benefit Also, we would increase our sensitivity to our working
horse-partnership
The other tape in this series is Anatomy in Mortion 2 ...the Visible
Rider.....where Peggy developed a 'bone suit' that allowed the demonstrator
rider to become a 'transparent' rider......:then showing how the human
skeleton is put together and how it can perform in unity with the horse.....
Demonstrating common riding faults and their effects on the horse and rider.
The tape is available from Trafalgar Square Publishing in
Vermont..1-800-423-4525
I believe they also have a website.
Add it to your list of things to do this winter, I think you will all find
it very interesting and enlightening.
