The white footed mouse and deer are hosts to the deer tick around here, and habitat that supports these two animals will be infected with ticks. For the deer it is places that are brushy, and for the mouse it is dead brown grass. I have noticed that I never pick up ticks in our sheep pastures (and hence our horses, which are surrounded by sheep, never have ticks on them as long as I do not take them off the property). Sheep eliminate the dead brown grass and brush, so I've guessed that they eliminate the mouse and deer habitat in the pasture. We also use guard dogs which tend to keep the deer on the outside of the fence (but unlike other dogs do not go chasing them throughout the neighborhood, the dogs are content to stop when the deer jump the fence).
Unfortunately our guard dogs do venture into the swamp and woods and it is there that they pick up all manor of ticks, along with lyme disease. I've used frontline on the dogs with pretty good success.
For those who have ticks on their horses, is there not an equivalent pour on for horses (like frontline)?
