The horse Snowman was Harry de Leyer's horse: Harry was a showman when he
jumped and I remember at Madison Square Garden cheering him on as the Long
Island contingent for horsemen as he cleared the puissance and jump offs.

1950-1960

In the fall of 1958 Harry de Leyer's Snowman, a Cinderella horse saved from
the killers, was hand walked to a New York studio for a TV appearance, after
which he returned to Madison Square Garden to win the National Horse Show's
$2,500 stakes class and, at week's end, the championship. Snowman was a
leading show jumper from 1959 to 1962. In 1959 he won a European puissance
class, jumping 7'2". He was a horse of common origins that captured the
hearts of spectators; he even had his own fan club. Snowman was the A.H.S.A.
high-point champion in 1958 and 1959 and reserve in 1960.

Also a horse, Nautical comes to mind as well as Hugh Wiley's horse
appeared to have a tail that helped him fly over the fences.

The formation of the United States Equestrian Team in 1950 moved the U.S.
into world class competition. Nautical, Disney's "Horse with the Flying
Tail," had a flair for the dramatic. The cameras followed Hugh Wiley's
Palomino around Europe until he qualified for the George V Cup at the 1959
Royal International in London. After a perfect first round before a full
crowd, Wiley matched Spain's Paco Goyoaga for a faultless second round and
precipitated a jump-off against the clock. In a brilliant finish, Nautical
won the class and the trophy.

Wonderful going!

I was wondering...does anyone remember a grey pony, I think his name was
Showman, who competed at the Grand Pre level years ago? Maybe in the 60's
or 70's. He was another memorable guy who truly had wings on his heels. I
remember he created quite a stir too, easily clearing 6'+ jumps. Sure was
something to see. I can't find anything on the web about him.
