Hello Friends--
Thanks for the info thus far on horse insurance. I
definitely have some leads to look into...but for the
exciting part, my fjord!
It has been a long road to finally be able to say that
I will have my very own fjord in my life. I do
believe in fate and I think that Fjern was meant to
come into my life at this time.
I first learned about the fjord breed sometime between
high school and college (I'm 31 now). My parents went
to Madison to pick up a special run Breyer horse for
me at the Midwest horse fair. For whatever reason I
wasn't able to go (a lifetime of collecting Breyers
was my substitute for never having a REAL horse!).
They came back with reports of a remarkable, friendly,
intelligent and unique breed of horse/pony called the
Norwegian fjord. I can't say exactly what started my
own obsession (perhaps my Scandinavian heritage?) But
I was drawn to their amicable dispostion, just right
size and sheer uniqueness (having lived in the land of
QH's and paints).
4 years ago, I eventually did get my first horse, a
starving, severly neglected off track thoroughbred for
a mere $300. Not exactly first horse material!
Chester challenged me every day, and has taught me so
much about life with horses (beyond the horse books
I'd read all my life!) I will have Chester until he
(or myself) is old and gray. He has a permanent place
in my heart, and though we've had our moments, I can't
imagine life without him. But that fjord longing, or
should I say obsession, never went away. The
financial aspect of purchasing a fjord just always
seemed out of reach, or at least completely
impractical. I'm single and supporting myself and had
a mountain of debt after college(student loans, car
pmt, credit cards, medical bills, etc) I have also
struggled with panic and anxiety. But all of a sudden
in this past year everything seemed to come together.
I paid off my debts, continued to save, and when I
reassessed my finances, I realized I could indeed
afford the fjord I'd always dreamed of (though not a
schoolmaster by any means!). A couple months back I
was going to look at a 19 year old gelding, but passed
due to apprehensions about his age. Through that I
connected with Laura Kranzusch through this list, who
told me about her friend Lisa and a 2 year old filly
she had. And the rest, as they say, is history! I
knew from the first picture, and the many more that
followed that I had to have Fjern!
I must say this is all so surreal and I would not have
found her if not for this list and the friends and
contacts I have made because of it. I know that
September will be here before we know it, and I don't
mind waiting for her arrival as I have waited this
long already! I must say I can't wait for the first
moment I put my arms around that lovely fjord neck and
to look in to those beautiful eyes!
And I think I will call her Daisy (just kidding Lisa!
:)
I'll keep you all posted...
