This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My barefoot trimmer almost never uses a hoof knife. She has used sturdy grape pruners to take out frog that is sloughing off. She works mostly with the rasp, and a little with nippers.
gail I second the suggestion to WEAR GLOVES when you use that rasp! Nasty bloody cuts on your fingers really hurt - and bleed. Those things are sharp. If you are just doing touch -ups you probably won't need to use the hoof knife - if you feel that you need to, get some forearm guards that they make for young soccer (?) players - if the knife slips it won't go gouging into your arm that is holding the hoof up. I learned from experience and some close calls. The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
