Congrats on the new ( old ) Holly whip. I do not own a vintage one, but have a nice knotty ( naughty ? ) fake old NEWer one that I also bought at Martins, but from a vendor. New or not ( knot ? ) they do require a bit of careful handleing, mostly protection. I highly advise you to go get a fishing pole case, hard, not soft. We keep our show whips in our house, so no tempting to grab one to train with. Light oiling to clean, and dont get the oil near your hand grip. Duh. The lash is best left hanging so it does not get kinks in it. Of course practice that perfect loop furl with 3 wraps, done just before you trot smartly into the ring for your class. It is proper to leave it furled during the pleasure type class's, but expect it will come undone a few times while you use it to cue. Brings me to the last point. A whip is not an accessory to fashion. It is an object for SAFETY and should remain in hand for the duration of the class, even in the final line-up, rein back. In reinsmanship, you should also show use of your whip to cue your horse for the different movements called for by the judge. I cannot warm up my pair using my Holly whip. My mare totally knows when I have it in hand and she basically yawns, flips me off and dies as far as extended movement gos. Soooooo I warm up using my dirty, springy training whip, then drop it ( hopefully behind her blinkers ) just as I enter the ring, Jeff handing me off my good whip. My mare KNOWS that she is not going to be corrected, cued, boinked, reminded or otherwise risk breaking it on her hard ( headed ) self, and she takes advantage big time. Her partner, her gelded son just follows mommys energy, so a moot point to just carry that accessory ( to them ) as far as getting anything showy out of the class. Practice with it at home as it will feel different than your everyday whip. Congrats on your new Holly ( Berry ? ) whip. Told you, cant help it. * what was it that Devo said ?? oh yeah...." whip it good ! " Lisa ************** Dell Mini Netbooks: Great deals starting at $299 after instant savings!
