there is no work on the reference tools because it's not very
portable (way less than the current asm optimizations).  the
third party implementations are good enough I think.

It has a chart with speedup results and here is a summary:Compared to reference 
flac 1.2.1 on Core i7 940, it runs approximately 10 times faster on GeForce GTX 
285, when using higher compression ratios (modes -7, -8). FlaCuda -8 is faster 
than flac -0, and provides better compression than flac -8. 

I am not a FLAC developer, but am curious to find out how 3rd party projects 
like this oneare interfaced into the FLAC sourceforge project.
