As of today FLAC has officially joined the Xiph project (Xiph is behind other codecs such as Vorbis and Theora).

Native FLAC will continue to exist as before, the FLAC format is not changing, the command- line tools and plugins will continue to work the same way, etc. Being part of Xiph will eventually lead to FLAC being able to be used inside the Ogg multimedia tools just like Vorbis or the other codecs. For example, you could have FLAC muxed in with a video stream as the lossless sound source. In addition, the codec libraries will be available under Xiph's BSD-like license.
